Apply the caulk at an even speed to ensure no beads form.

But mostly there are two important reasons for caulking baseboards.
If there s any existing caulk remove as much of it as possible.
Over time as joists sag and foundations recede gaps develop under the baseboard.
When setting the tape hold the roll flat up against the baseboard as a guide in positioning the tape first photo above.

Once the area is prepared load a cartridge into your caulking gun and begin to caulk the top of the baseboards where the wall and baseboard meet.
A putty knife 5 in 1 tool or wire brush can help dislodge the old stuff run.
This will ensure clean uniform lines.
Before caulking your baseboards use masking tape on the floor following the length of the baseboard and on the wall 1 16th of an inch above the baseboard.
In some cases these gaps are wide enough that they allow air infiltration and can seriously impact your energy consumption.
Use good quality tape 3m 1 blue painter s tape.

Smooth out the caulk before it dries and removes the tape.

Let the caulk dry.
